I know that a lot of you have been feeling helpless in the face of what’s been going on. But there are things that we can do.
There have been protests- at the Treasury, at state capitols, and yesterday all across the country for “Not My President’s Day.” Citizens who are denouncing Elon Musk’s DOGE spending cuts and the Nazism and fascism in the new administration. (Just typing that made me feel a little sick.)
Before I sat down to work, I sent a letter to the Governor of NY, Kathy Hochul, asking her to fire Mayor Adams for selling his corrupt soul to the devil, aka *CF Trump.
I’ve suggested you call and write to your elected officials. But there’s something else you might have heard about that you can do.
On Friday February 28th, there will be an economic blackout. What exactly does that mean? Well, for 24 hours we don’t spend. Not online, not in-store. We do not use credit or debit cards.
If you must spend, only buy essentials. And only support small, local businesses.
We especially don’t want to spend any money at places like Target, Walmart, or Amazon. My books are sold on Amazon, and I am actually telling you NOT to buy them. At least not on February 28th.
I am a person who likes to shop as much as the next guy. Okay, maybe a little more. But I am going to do my best to abide by this shopping blackout. I’m not saying I won’t LOOK at anything, but my credit cards will stay in my wallet. Because I want my voice heard.
We want them to know that WE have the power. The plan is to start with one day, then maybe two or three. We will do what we need to.
I’m not suggesting that if you are out of milk, you need to eat your cereal dry. Or that your baby’s bottle remains empty. But maybe skip that new handbag for a while- that was actually meant for me, not you.
Right now Republicans are considering deep cuts to Medicaid- 80 million U.S. adults and children are enrolled in the program. The country’s richest taking away from the poorest. People Musk called “parasites.”
In case you missed it, the head of Social Security stepped down over Doge’s requests to access Social Security recipient information. I personally don’t like Musk having all my information and I suspect you don’t either. With one key stroke he can change a lot.
In the interest of full disclosure- my husband had a ten-year-old Tesla. I would no longer ride in it. And I think he felt pretty icky about it too because two weeks ago he traded it in for a different electric vehicle.
I saw a video of Sheryl Crow waving goodbye to her Tesla- she sold it and donated the proceeds to NPR. I love that so much. I want to be like Sheryl.
If you are feeling helpless and hopeless just remember these are our elected officials who are perpetrating this coup. It may take a little time and a whole lot of effort, but we will take back our country.
Share the message- no shopping on February 28th.

When my son and DIL were shopping for an EV, they specifically avoided Tesla, and this was before the election, but after he took over Twitter. I've never been on Twitter/X, never even sat in a Tesla, and wouldn't get in a SpaceX rocket if you paid me! I refuse to even set foot in Walmart, Chick-fil-a, or Hobby Lobby.
Since last month (has it only been a month?) I have also canceled my Prime account and stopped shopping at Amazon and Whole Foods (that one hurts!). Trader Joe's is getting more of my business, and I even created a Nook account so I can buy my e-books from Barnes & Noble instead of Amazon. Target is another matter, though. There are some things I do require that I can only buy there. I will stay out of stores on Feb 28, maybe grab a latte at my locally owned coffee shop.
“ Citizens who are denouncing Elon Musk’s DOGE spending cuts and the Nazism and fascism in the new administration. (Just typing that made me feel a little sick.)” Just reading that makes me feel sick. 💔
